Wedding Gowns Traditions and Superstitions to Consider Before the Big Day

As a future bride, you have your own worries about the whole event: will your wedding day be great, will your dress look lovely, and will the menu be liked by your guests? On top of that, there are so many superstitions connected to the wedding ceremony itself, that everyone around you is warning you about…With such an important event, superstitions are not uncommon. If you are a pretty superstitious girl, you will definitely be watching these traditions closely. Most of these are related to wedding gowns, so read below, if you care about these traditions and you want to enhance the specialness of your wedding day by following them.

Wearing your dress before the wedding

According to the oldest traditions around, wedding gowns are made to be worn on the wedding day only, so wearing any part of the bridal outfit before that time may result in real bad luck. At least this is what the oldest superstition says. And if you do have to wear it, or a part of it prior to that moment, never look at your reflection in a full mirror. Later on, this superstition has expanded to a more popular belief that the groom shouldn’t catch a glimpse of the wedding dress before the ceremony begins.

Try not to tear your dress

This is considered bad omen so step carefully into your attire. If wedding gowns get torn during the event, it is believed that one of the spouses will die.

Don’t participate into the sewing of your gown

Even if you are quite handy with a needle, you are not allowed to sew in our wedding dress, not a stitch, in fact. The superstition goes that you would be very unhappy throughout your married life and you will shed as many tears as many stitches you have sewn on your gown. Another variation of this is that a dress is never to be completely sewn until a few minutes before the bride walks down the aisle. So, it would be handy to have a friend who is handy with a needle prepared to complete the last stitch on your dress.

Choose your fabric and color wisely

Never wear wedding gowns that are made of satin, this is considered bad luck material. Also, stay away from velvet, since it is believed to be a sign of poverty. Choose simple fabrics, no patterns on them, especially stay away from fabrics decorated with bird and vine symbols. If you want to have a very happy married life, choose silk and consider white or ivory, but never red.

There are many other superstitions or traditions connected to wedding gowns and they differ from one country to another, from culture to culture. For instance, in Greek tradition, when walking down the aisle, the bride should wear a sugar cube in her glove, so she can have a sweet life with her partner. Italian superstitions require brides to put a coin in their show or stockings, this is believed to bring a prosper life. In British culture, if they want to have a blessed marriage, the brides should allow their cat (or a neighbor’s cat) to eat from their left wedding shoe, every day in the week before the marriage. Not to mention the “something blue, something borrowed, something new, something old” tradition, a custom that seems to be quite common in the United States.

No matter what superstitions you intend to follow on your wedding day, you should remember that the wedding dress you wear should remain a reflection of who you are, what you like.
